The 2014 Classic Wines

In 2014 the Shiraz and Sangiovese ripened slowly, through mostly cool weather and thanks ultimately to the sun-catching southerly aspect of our vineyard site at Porrona, to yield wines that are lighter in both alcohol and body than our norm. The wines are bright, elegant, savoury, and studded with beautiful aromas and flavours. With this vintage we decided to forego the wood ageing for our classic wines, preferring instead to bottle them early and capture that youthful brightness of the Shiraz and Sangiovese fruit.

Montecucco D.O.C. Rosso

Sangiovese-Shiraz blend. A perfect marriage of these two varieties - on almost equal terms - and a Beat-ish interpretation of the Montecucco Rosso DOC appellation rules. Unusually, we picked the Shiraz and the Sangiovese for this blend around the same time, enabling us to co-ferment them - with intriguing results.
The wine initially appears brooding, with its mysterious black-tinged, deep crimson velvet colour, then the bouquet rapidly unfolds to reveal layers of dark and red fruit, cinnamon spice, viola flowers and orange peel. Spiciness, stewed marasca cherries and elderberries dominate the palate attack, giving way then to more complex balsamic and cigar box notes, with our characteristic savoury-garrigue point adding breadth and length. Pleasant chewy tannins, a bright acidity and subdued alcohol complete the structure.
While versatile in its aptitude for matching, we find this wine a compelling match for the gutsy [sic] flavours and textures of traditional roman slaughterhouse fare: carbonara-amatriciana-vaccinara-coratella and more... At one, also, with the hunter-style game stews of its home territory.
