A blend of mostly Sangiovese with a small amount of Shiraz from our Porrona vineyard, and testimony to our conviction that these two varieties fit together and complement each other brilliantly. The Sangiovese provides the savoury base and a fresh acidity with a complex of red fruit aromas - cherry, raspberry and a hint of marasca – along with the crystalline ruby-red colour. The Shiraz adds herbal notes of garrigue, lends weight and length, and helps to round out the palate with its spiciness and firm tea-like tannins. A worthy match for the festive turkey; also goes well with full-flavoured pasta and rice dishes.
The 2013 Wines
2013 was a generous and satisfying year for Shiraz, although hail strikes in spring and again in summer had us worried. The Sangiovese suffered crop losses, first from the hail and later from starling raids, but the quality of the fruit was concentrated by the forced thinning. This vintage saw a return to the classic phases of ripening, with the Shiraz harvested at the end of September and the Sangiovese in late October, allowing for a cooler, more drawn out ripening period. The wines are balanced and concentrated, fruit-driven and finely structured.
A pure expression of the quality of Mediterranean Shiraz: a savoury, tarry, elegant wine, good for drinking with food now, but also for cellaring. Deep purple colour with a crimson rim. Intense and complex aromas of black fruits – elderberry, mulberry and morello cherries – with hints of eucalyptus and garrigue. Follows through to a full-bodied palate teeming with fruit, floral, chocolate and spice characters, well-structured with firm acidity and a long grippy tannin finish. Great with roast lamb and pork, game dishes and aged pecorino cheeses. Awarded a Silver medal at the 2015 Decanter Asia Wine Awards!!!
